Ubogagu spoils the party for Notts County with a debut goal

NOTTS County manager Rick Passmoor was left wondering what could have been despite seeing his side earn a point against Arsenal.

CHIOMA Ubogagu rescued a point for Arsenal with a goal on her debut after Ellen White had netted against her former charges.

White, who won two league titles with Arsenal, put hosts Notts County ahead in the first half with her maiden goal for the club only to then miss a penalty soon after and watch on as American Ubogagu scored with five minutes left as the Gunners kicked off their FA WSL 1 campaign with a draw.

Both teams started cautiously, with the first real chance coming for Notts County on the quarter hour after a Laura Bassett free-kick caused confusion in the Arsenal defence, with the ball narrowly going wide.

The Magpies began to get a foothold in the game and on 26 minutes a nicely worked free-kick saw White sweetly curl a right-footed shot past Emma Byrne in the Gunners goal.

Barely a minute later it should have been two for Rick Passmoor’s side as White was tripped in the box by Jemma Rose, but the resulting penalty was hooked wide by the England striker.

The start of the second half proved to be a much more evenly balanced game as both teams had half-chances as Jess Clarke was again proving to be influential for the Magpies.

And after getting closer and closer Arsenal were level on 84 minutes through substitute Ubogagu, on for Lianne Sanderson, as she smashed home a 20-yard half volley shot to earn the Gunners a draw.
