Kirby and Hobbs scoop Player of the Month awards

Fran Kirby and Nicola Hobbs rewarded after duo enjoyed a fine December for respective clubs

Fran Kirby has been selected as The FA WSL 1 Player of the Month for December.

Kirby has been a key player in Chelsea’s two-pronged attack on the league title and Continental Tyres Cup and she continued her fine form in December.

The 24-year-old found the net six times last month, including goals against Yeovil and Tottenham and a match-winning hat-trick against Liverpool which set up a Continental Tyres Cup semi-final against Manchester City this Sunday (2pm kick-off at Kingsmeadow).

The Lionesses star fought off tough competition from a shortlist including Reading’s Brooke Chaplen and in-form Man City forward Claire Emslie.

Kirby said: “Overall, I was really happy with how I performed and also as a team we got some really good results so it was a really positive month and hopefully I can continue that form throughout the year.”

Meanwhile, London Bees goalkeeper Nicola Hobbs scooped the Player of the Month award in WSL 2.

Hobbs saved the crucial penalty as her side recorded a shootout win over Watford in the Continental Tyres Cup before impressing in a dramatic 2-1 victory over Oxford in the league.

She said: “I feel like I performed well last month. Saving the penalty against Watford to get our first win was a real highlight for me.”

The FA WSL Player of the Month award celebrates the best players in FA WSL 1, FA WSL 2 and The FA WSL Continental Tyres Cup. Each month, three players are shortlisted based on their performances before a media panel selects a winner for each division.
