Doncaster 2-1 Lincoln

Doncaster Rovers Belles manager John Buckley was delighted with his side’s performance in their 2-1 win at home to Lincoln Ladies - a result which lifts them off the bottom of the table.

Alyssa Lagonia and Millie Bright scored either side of the break before Precious Hamilton pulled a goal back for the visitors.

Buckley said: “It was probably as well as we’ve played. I thought we moved the ball around well, particularly in the first-half.

“It was a great first goal after Alyssa spotted the keeper off her line.

“I’m really pleased with them. We were holding on in the last ten minutes but I’m just pleased that we managed to hold on.

“It’s a relief that we’re off the bottom of the table but we should be winning games.

“I know they can do it. We told them before the game that they had to believe it themselves.”

After early pressure from the visitors, with Carla Cantrell (twice), Jess Clarke and Remi Allen having efforts saved, Lagonia (20) scored with a superb long-range effort to give Doncaster the lead.

Spotting Nicola Hobbs off her line, Lagonia chipped from wide on the right and the keeper could only help the ball into the net after scrambling back.

Bright (66) put the hosts further ahead, firing home after Hobbs punched the ball out from a corner.

After substitute Precious Hamilton (73) pulled a goal back for Lincoln against her former club, Jessica Sigsworth could have put Doncaster further in front when she was one-on-one with Hobbs but the keeper blocked her effort.

Lincoln manager Glen Harris had no complaints about the result. He said: “They deserved to win.

“Credit to Doncaster Rovers Belles because they had a game plan and they stuck to it. I can’t take anything away from them.

“I think the game summed up our season because we’ve been inconsistent. Our girls gave it a go and kept plugging away but we couldn’t push on.

“We’ve now got to prepare for Birmingham in the semi-finals of the Continental Cup. That’s where our season rests now.”
