BRISTOL Academy Ladies leapfrogged Chelsea in the WSL thanks to a wonder-strike from Helen Blezard.
After 25 minutes of a competitive and occasionally heated first half, the visitors snatched the lead thanks to a fantastic solo effort from Blezard.
The midfielder picked the ball up on the left and cut inside onto her favoured right foot, taking Chelsea’ decision to retreat as an invitation to try her luck from range. Her effort skimmed across the Imperial Fields grass and smashed into the inside of the side netting.
Chelsea’s best chance of equalizing came after 41 minutes when Kate Longhurst beat the offside trap and set herself for a strike on goal.
The forward’s effort was saved by the legs of Bristol goalkeeper Siobhan Chamberlain and when the rebound fell to Chelsea winger Ashlee Hincks she could only drag her follow-up shot wide.
Both sides went close early in the second half; Ashlee Hincks’ deft touch set up Helen Lander on 54 minutes but she failed to find the target from close range under pressure from the Bristol defence.
Mark Samson’s side came close to doubling their lead just minutes later when an in-swinging free-kick was met by Anouk Hoogendijk but her header was wayward.
Bristol’s Gemma Rose almost stunned the crowd with a 45-yard strike on 68 minutes when she was teed up from an indirect free-kick and stung Chelsea keeper Sarah Quantrill’s hands.
Lillie Billson had another chance to put the game beyond doubt when she beat the Chelsea offside trap but keeper Quantrill beat her to the ball in the nick of time before team-mate Jess Fishlock missed with a diving header in the dying seconds.
