Jo Wilson expects London Bees to come back from the mid-season break stronger after her late goal salvaged a draw against Durham in the FA Women’s Super League 2 on Sunday.
The Bees took the lead just before the break courtesy of an own-goal before Durham went in front in the second half thanks to a Beth Hepple penalty and a goal from substitute Mercy Darkoah.
But Wilson fired home with seven minutes remaining to extend the Bees’ unbeaten run to three matches at Northwood Park.
Wilson said: “I’ve been told to go front post so I did that – and I managed to get the goal. It was a point we deserved but maybe we could have got all three – although one is better than none.
“I think we definitely reacted better. We didn’t let our heads drop and we got the goal back – that’s the main thing.
“We couldn’t let our heads go down after going 2-1 behind, we had to go and get that goal. We definitely didn’t deserve to come away with nothing and one point is all right.
“We’ve started better than last season: we’re climbing. It’ll be difficult with the mid-season break, everyone will keep doing their own thing in term of fitness, and hopefully we’ll come back stronger afterwards.”
The hosts took the lead just before the break when Durham goalkeeper Helen Alderson flapped at a header back from Sarah Wilson, with the ball looping over her head and into the net.
Durham had what they thought to be the equaliser nine minutes into the second half when Jordan Atkinson’s header from a corner was disallowed but a minute later were level when the referee spotted a handball in the penalty area and Hepple smashed past Sophie Harris.
Durham then took the lead in the 78th minute through Darkoah’s excellent, instinctive first-time strike, low into the bottom left corner.
But the Bees refused to give up and seven minutes from time Jo Wilson fired Nikki Watts’s cross into the bottom corner to grab a point.
Durham’s Natalie Gutteridge said: “The second half we came out fighting. The first half wasn’t really good enough for us.
“We found it really hard to get it going and we weren’t doing the simple things we needed to do. We’ve got to be happy with the reaction in the second half.
“There were some harsh words at half-time. We needed to pick our game up a little bit. We won a battle on Thursday night so coming here and going away with nothing would have meant Thursday meant nothing. We’re pleased with the second half, just disappointed to concede at the end.”
