A first half double from Caroline Weir kick started a comfortable 6-0 win for Liverpool as the Reds got their FA Women's Super League Continental Tyres Cup campaign off to an excellent start against Sheffield.
The Scottish international opened the scoring after just ten minutes, latching onto Alex Greenwood’s long pass to slot home from inside the area.
Greenwood was then denied by the post, as her free-kick left visiting keeper Danielle Gibbons stranded on 13 minutes, before Gibbons made a fine point blank save to deny Weir four minutes later.
Weir then grabbed her second goal on 29 minutes, as her effort from outside the area was fumbled into the net by Gibbons.
The visitors did almost fashion a chance to get a goal back two minutes later, but Rhema Lord-Mears could not get a clean connection on her effort and Siobhan Chamberlain made the save.
Liverpool began the second half strongly and their lead was extended on 52 minutes, as Greenwood’s left-wing cross was deflected into her own net by Sheffield defender Ellie Gilliatt.
Sophie Ingle made it four for the hosts on 65 minutes, rising to powerfully head home a cross from Weir, after the visitors failed to clear a corner.
Substitute Ali Johnson netted a fifth goal for Liverpool on 83 minutes, racing on to a through ball from Beth England to fire past Gibbons.
England then got on the scoresheet on 90 minutes, with her first goal for the club, tapping home from close range.
Liverpool goalscorer Caroline Weir said:
"We are all pretty positive, we won 6-0 tonight, we played well and we haven't conceded. Tonight will give us confidence for the cup games to come."
"It was important to keep going in the second half. We knew it was going to be tough and Sheffield would sit in and we'd have a lot of the ball, knew we would need to be patient.
"Delighted to score six goals and get a few different goalscorers. It is always good to get an early goal in games like this and we built from there."
"It is also important to remain switched on at the back and we are delighted to do that."
Sheffield defender Sarah Jackson added:
"Tonight was a really hard test against Liverpool, but we will go away and focus on the league.
"After half time, we knew we'd have to go for it, it is a cup game after all, and we tried to push on. At half time, we knew it wasn't good enough so we tried to fix what was going wrong, but our own mistakes cause goals.
"We tried to get more communication across the pitch and once we sorted that out it was better at times. But overall it just wasn't good enough.
"We had some chances towards the end but it wasn't to be. We'll get back to training now and look to focus on the league."
