Doncaster Rovers Belles forward Bethany England is hoping the fates will be in their favour after 3-0 victory over Oxford kept them in the FA WSL 2 title chase.
The league winner may end up being the side with the better goal difference and already-promoted Doncaster knew would have to win their last two games heavily to pip Reading to the title.
But Oxford, who had won all of their previous three league games, showed good organisation to keep the scoring down.
Goalkeeper Demi Lambourne was in fantastic form, making wonderful saves from FA WSL2 top scorer Courtney Sweetman-Kirk and denying England a hat-trick.
England said: “We’ve got the three points again. I know we’ve sealed promotion but the more goals we score the more chance we have of going through as champions.
“Reading are on a good run at the minute but they’ve got some tough games in hand and we’ve proven that we can still hit the back of the net and come away with three points.
“I can speak for myself and all of the girls when I say that as much as we wanted to go up as champions and prove a point.
“Unfortunately we’ve put ourselves in a tricky situation, but then that’s Doncaster. We always make seem to make things hard for ourselves.
“We’ve just got to concentrate on our own game and hope Reading slip up.”
Veteran winger Sue Smith converted Belles’ first from the penalty spot after Rosie Lane handled her shot midway through the first half.
Courtney Sweetman-Kirk went clear through ten minutes later, but Lambourne saved from a narrow angle, and the striker hit the post after going through again just before the break.
Unmarked England met Smith’s cross with a diving header to make it 2-0 on 58 minutes.
England found the net again from Sweetman-Kirk’s pass eight minutes from time, and only Lambourne’s heroics kept her from a third.
Oxford boss Les Taylor said: “Demi’s done quite well second half. She had a few one-on-ones where she’s dealt with the situation really well.
“We kept them down to one goal in the first half and I thought that if we’d won a few more second balls or 50-50 balls it would have given us a chance.
“Doncaster are a good side and deservedly got promotion, and we congratulate them on that, but for us to come and compete for 45, 50, 60 minutes is decent from our point of view.”
