Kate Natkiel shone with a brace as Brighton & Hove Albion began their first-ever FA Women’s Super League Continental Tyres Cup campaign with a comfortable victory over Yeovil Town.

Fliss Gibbons and Ini Umotong were also on target as the Seagulls hit the ground running in Group Two South.

Umotong forced the Glovers’ debutant goalkeeper Laura O’Sullivan into an early save with seven minutes on the clock while Bow Jackson was first to threaten at the other end for Yeovil, who made eight changes to the side that started their 1-0 loss to Sunderland at the weekend.

In the 17th minute, striker Umotong came within a whisker of opening the scoring as her header from a Gibbons cross crashed against the crossbar and shortly before the half-hour mark, the latter made it 1-0, nodding in at the near post from a Sophie Perry corner.

Three minutes before the break, Umotong came to the fore and rounded O’Sullivan before firing into an empty net to double Brighton’s advantage and moments later, Natkiel slotted home to swing the pendulum thoroughly in the Seagulls’ direction.

As Yeovil struggled to find a route back into the contest in the second period, Umotong flashed a header wide of the mark for the home side and with 20 minutes to go, Hope Powell’s side were celebrating once again.

Natkiel grabbed her second of the night in spectacular fashion, rounding off a fine night’s work by rifling home a long-range left-footed howitzer that pinged into the net off the woodwork.

In added time, the Glovers gained some crumbs of consolation with a late double-salvo, Paige Sawyer and substitute Kaleigh Green notching in quick succession.
